TL;DR

An interactive mockup simulating a product’s behavior before development.

A UX prototype is an interactive mockup that simulates a product's real behavior (clicks, transitions, animations) before any development takes place. It allows a user journey to be tested with real users and friction points to be identified before investing in technical build. Tools like Figma make it possible to create realistic clickable prototypes.

Frequently asked questions

What is a prototype in UX design?

Icon chevron

It is a clickable simulation of a product, built before any code exists. In a tool like Figma you link screens together so people can tap through the flow and you can watch where they hesitate or get lost.

What is the difference between a wireframe and a prototype in UX?

Icon chevron

A wireframe is a low-fidelity skeleton of a screen showing layout and content blocks, usually static. A prototype links screens into an interactive flow people can click through. Wireframes settle structure, prototypes test how the experience feels.
